// The Importance of Eye Health

Recently visited the flagship LensCrafters in NYC and could not have asked for a better experience for my eye health. Being healthy includes taking care of your vision. And taking care of your vision includes other practices that are good for your body and your eyes such as working out and maintaining a nutrient-rich diet of whole foods.

Wearing prescription glasses (and contacts often when I’m traveling) means I have to keep up with my eye doctor visits so that my prescription is not only accurate but is not hurting my eyes by being too strong or too weak. Maintenance is key. The best part of a total eye exam is that you can also ask questions about what’s going on with your eyes (and, of course, get screened for serious conditions that can greatly alter vision in the long run.) I learned so much during my visit as I suffer from dry eyes. It’s why I wear glasses regularly instead of contacts. However, not all eye drops are created equal and some can make your dry eye problems worse! Having dry eyes can lead to many issues, outside of it just being darn uncomfortable. If you wear contacts, you can even rip your cornea off due to a lens sticking to an overly dry eye! Cringe-worthy stories aside, I’m overly sensitive to my eyes, and most dry eyes are just a product of us not blinking enough. But here are some dry eye tips for all of you.

  • Just like you put cream on your skin every morning, put in your eye drops. Eyes have to be lubed up too!
  • Put in eye drops before putting in contacts. Make sure the drops are safe for contact-lens.
  • Pick an eye drop that is safe! Visine is not a good option, I use Blink regular drops for day and Blink gel drops for night, but Systane Ultra is also very good.
  • Up healthy fats in your diet, such as fish oil (2000g a day,) to help lubricate the eyes, and the body as a whole.

Now for my fellow glasses wearers, I learned that you can now get Blue IQ lenses that protect your eyes from blue light damage (that comes from looking at screens all day!) I already set my phone to ‘night mode’ but seeing I’m writing on a computer most all day, every day? This is a major upgrade for eye health, thank you LensCrafters! They also have any and all frames y’all might want these days, including designer aviators for those fashion blogger types and my classic CB club masters from RayBan, but there really is something for every style and budget. Though I was most impressed with the quality of the eye exam!

Another key thing to mention is the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes, you look at a screen, try to look away at a distance of 20 feet for 20 seconds. Little things help a lot to keep eyes healthy.
